Teenage sensation Peace Muduwa steals the show in Ankole girls football

Girls’ football in Uganda, particularly in the Ankole region, continues to register remarkable growth, both in participation and in the quality of play.

This steady progress has largely been driven by the increasing embrace of the sport in institutions of learning from primary to secondary school level, leading to the establishment of structured teams and competitions across the region.

The improvement is evident in the performances of several Western Uganda schools such as Boni Consilii, Sheema Girls, Nyabubare SS and Kyeizooba Girls, which have consistently competed favourably against established national sides like Kawempe Muslim and St Noa Girls.

At the recently concluded USSSA Ankole Girls’ Football Championship in Ibanda, fans witnessed a rare display of individual brilliance from a gifted young player, Peace Muduwa.

The 17-year-old forward, who joined Boni Consilii Girls’ Vocational SS at the start of the term from Shammah High School in Mityana, has quickly made a significant impact.

Her arrival has strengthened the attacking force of the team and added a new dimension to their style of play, while also inspiring further interest in girls’ football within the region.

Muduwa stood out throughout the championship with exceptional technical ability, pace and composure in front of goal. She scored an impressive 26 goals in eight matches, finishing as both the Most Valuable Player and top scorer of the tournament. Her only blank came in the final, where Boni Consilii secured a 1-0 victory over Sheema Girls through a penalty converted by Rinah Ariho.

Her performances drew large crowds, with fans turning up in numbers to watch Boni Consilii matches, eager to witness her skill and creativity.

‘I am delighted to have been part of the winning team and to contribute to the victories that earned us the title. I am continuing to work hard to improve, and with my teammates, I believe we can achieve even more,’ Muduwa said.

She demonstrated a wide range of finishing ability, scoring from set pieces, long-range efforts and solo runs. Notably, she found the net eight times in a 16-0 victory over Maria Girls in the group stages.

Boni Consilii team manager Primus Ngabirano praised her attitude and potential.

‘She is a disciplined player with a strong willingness to learn. She has been a valuable addition to the team, and with the teamwork within the squad, we believe she can achieve great things in school football,’ he noted.

Wearing the captain’s armband, Muduwa guided Boni Consilii to a third consecutive USSSA Ankole title, underlining the team’s dominance in the region. The reigning national bronze medallists will now set their sights on the national championship scheduled to take place in Mukono next month.

Born in Sironko District, Muduwa began her education at His Grace Nursery and Primary School before joining Shammah High School in Mityana for her O-Level studies. She is currently pursuing HED/ICT at Boni Consilii Girls’ Vocational SS in Isingiro District.

At club level, the Teen Cranes forward features for Kampala Queens Women Football Club alongside Esther Ainembabazi, Rinah Ariho and Loyce Komugisha in the FUFA Women Super League.
