Amus College School will represent Uganda in both the Boys and Girls categories at the 2026 CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA qualifiers in Kigali, Rwanda, as it kicks off today.
The zonal qualifiers will run until 5th September 2026, with eight CECAFA member countries competing for regional honours and qualification to the continental stage of the CAF African Schools Football Championship.
Uganda’s Boys team, represented by Amus College, enters the competition as the defending champions after St. Mary’s Kitende won the 2025 edition.
The Boys have been drawn in Group B alongside Somalia, South Sudan and Burundi, while hosts Rwanda, Kenya, Sudan and Tanzania make up Group A.
In the Girls category, Amus College has been placed in Group A alongside hosts Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan. Group B comprises Tanzania, Sudan, Kenya and Somalia.
The top two teams from each group in both categories will advance to the semi-finals, with the winners earning the right to represent the CECAFA Zone at the CAF African Schools Football Championship continental stage.
The Girls’ matches will be played at the FERWAFA Complex ground, while the Boys will compete at Kigali Pele Stadium. The final day of the tournament on 5th September will also be staged at Kigali Pele Stadium.
Amus College return to the regional stage having previously featured in the competition in 2022. The school’s Girls’ team finished third at the 2022 edition in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, providing valuable regional-level experience.
Four years later, Amus will be seeking to build on that experience as the school represents Uganda in both categories.
CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe initiated the competition to provide young players with an opportunity to develop their talent through competitive football.
CECAFA Competitions Director Yusuf Mossi said the tournament gives youngsters a platform to nurture their talent through competition.
The tournament, supported by the Motsepe Foundation, also offers significant rewards, with the winners in each category receiving US$100,000, runners-up US$75,000 and third-placed teams US$50,000.
The prize money is earmarked for improving school infrastructure, including the construction of classrooms, upgrading sports facilities and installing clean water systems.
With Uganda represented by Amus College School in both categories, the country will be hoping for strong performances from the young players as they seek regional success and a place at the continental championship.
