U17 AFCON preparations: Laryea Kingston reflects on first training session

The Uganda U-17 Men’s National Team Head Coach, Laryea Kingston, has shared his early impressions after the team conducted its first training session as preparations continue for the 2026 Africa U-17 Cup of Nations.

The training session marked the start of camp for the provisional squad at the FUFA Technical Centre Njeru, with the technical team focusing on light exercises to gradually introduce the players to the training programme.

Kingston expressed satisfaction with the players’ attitude and application during the opening session, noting that the initial focus is on physical activation before progressing to more intensive tactical work.

‘This is the first training and the impressions have been very good. We started on a very low note because we need to get the muscles going. I think the boys are looking a bit sharp,’ Kingston said.

He acknowledged that opening sessions can sometimes be challenging for players as they adjust to the demands of camp but emphasised that the intensity will gradually increase.

‘Of course, the first training is sometimes a bit difficult for them. We started the training very slow but with time it picked up a little bit. It’s the first training so we will build up from it,’ he added.

The coach also revealed that the camp is yet to reach full attendance, with more players expected to report in the coming days.

‘We are still expecting some players to join so that we have a full house and then the education will start. This week will be more about activating the muscles so that the boys get going. Proper education will start next week,’ he explained.

Kingston remains optimistic about the early progress and believes the team is on the right path as preparations gather momentum.

‘It looks good so far and we are looking forward to having good days ahead,’ he concluded.
