Ugandan players in Diaspora: Najjemba nets hat trick, Luwagga, Jamal make debuts

League action returned over the weekend with a number of Ugandan foreign based players representing their respective clubs in the diaspora.

102.1 FUFA fm’s Ronnie Lusulire who also presents Tugukyangira Bunayira, a program dedicated to Ugandan foreign based players every Tuesday from 10pm to Midnight kept close tabs on them to find out how they fared.


Fauzia Najjemba scored a hat trick and registered two assists as BIIK Kazygurt thumped Sdyurshor 7-0.

Striker William Kizito Luwagga made his debut for Sabail FK and played the full 90 minutes as they lost 3-1 to Qarabag FC in the Azerbaijani Premier League opener.

South Africa

The DStv Premiership kicked off on Friday with Mamelodi Sundowns beating Cape Town City 2-0. Dennis Onyango was an unused substitute as new signing Ronwen Williams made his debut in goal.

Jamal Salim Magoola made his debut for Richards Bay FC and kept a clean sheet as they beat Golden Arrows 2-0 away from home on Saturday.

Ismail Watenga was not part of the Marumo Gallants team that drew goalless with Stellenbosch on the same day.


Allan Kyambadde was not part of the El Gouna FC squad that lost 4-1 to league leaders Zamalek.


Striker Derrick Kakooza came off the bench in the 85th minute as Valmiera II beat SC Grobira 3-2 in the Latvian second tier. He replaced Senegalese forward Meissa Diop.


Moses Oloya and captain Joseph Mpande played an instrumental role as their club Hai Phong won 1-0 against SHB Da Nang in the Vietnamese topflight. Mpande played in central defense while Oloya was in the midfield.

Geoffrey Baba Kizito played for his club Nam Dinh and helped them win 2-1 against Ho Chi Minh City on the same match day.


Mustafa Kizza was an unused substitute as his side lost 4-0 to Benfica in the Portuguese Primeira Liga opening game on Friday in Lisbon.


Miya Farouk played a part in Caykur Rizespor’s 2-0 win over Pazarspor which was also their last pre-season friendly match before their second tier league season campaign officially stars. Miya has scored four goals in six friendlies for his new side.


Bevis Mugabi played full-time in Motherwell’s 2-1 defeat to St. Johnstone in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday.


Uganda Cranes right back Elvis Bwomono played full-time for IBV Vestmannaeyjar and lost 4-0 to KR Reykjavik in the Iceland topflight.


Pius Obuya made his debut for Radnicki Sremska Mitrovica in the Serbian second tier but lost 9-1 to Radnicki Novi Beograd.

Obuya who recently crossed over from Kabel Novi Sad, another Serbian club, came off the bench in the 69th minute to replace Aleksandr Rakic.


Left back Jordan Obita played fulltime for Wycombe Wanderers and lost 3-0 to former Premier League side Bolton Wanderers in the English League One on Saturday.


Striker Mahad Kayondo scored a brace as his side CSM Deva thumped Retezatul Hateg in a friendly match. He scored in the 39th and 73rd minutes as preparations for the new Romanian third tier season continue.


Left back Shafik Batambuze featured for his Singida Big Stars as they beat Zambia’s Zanaco 1-0 in a friendly game. He was later replaced in the closing stages of the encounter by Yassin Mustafa.

Batambuze’s compatriots Matia Lule and Steven Billy Kiggundu were also part of the Singida Big Stars technical team after joining the club recently.

In another encounter, Khalid Aucho was in the midfield as Yanga lost 2-0 to Uganda Premier League Champions Vipers in a friendly game in Dar es Salaam.


Musa Esenu played for Rayon Sports as they beat Edward Satulo’s AS Kigali 1-0 in a pre-season friendly encounter. Rayon Sports will be playing another friendly game against Vipers next week.


Goalkeeper Vanessa Karungi played for B.93 Women but lost 1-0 against Aalborg Ladies in the Danish Women’s second tier.

Midfielder Moses Opondo currently plays for AC Horsens in the Danish topflight league. He played full-time as they lost 1-0 Randers FC.

Robert Kakeeto made his debut for third division club Middlefart BK and helped them win 4-0 against FA 2000 on Saturday.


Ritah Kivumbi played part in a hard fought 5-4 win for her side Mallbackens IF against Team TG FF in the Swedish Women’s second tier league on Sunday.

Striker Alexis Bbakka played 66 minutes for Umea FC as they lost 3-2 to Sollentuna FF in the Swedish third tier league. He was shown a yellow in the first half before he was replaced by Linus Marklund just after the hour mark.

Ronald Mukiibi was sidelined by injury as his club Degerfors lost 2-0 to IFK Norrkoping in the Swedish topflight league also known as the Allsvenskan.


Left back Aziz Kayondo continued with his progress at Real Monarchs FC and played fulltime as they won 3-1 against Vancouver Whitecaps II in the MLS Next Pro League.

Musa Ramathan came off the bench and saw his header hit the cross bar from a corner kick as his club Cincinnati FC II lost 3-2 to Philadelphia Union II in the same Next Pro League on Sunday night. Musa replaced David Garcia at the start of the second half.

Mike Azira was not part of the New Mexico United FC’s squad as they lost 3-0 to Miami FC in the second tier league also known as the USL Championship.

Striker Edward Kizza was an used substitute as his new club Pittsburgh Riverhounds won 2-0 against Indy Eleven in the USL Championship.

Steven Sserwadda was an unused substitute as New York Red Bulls drew 0-0 with Wayne Rooney’s coached side DC United in the Major League Soccer.

Action will continue on Monday with Timothy Awany and Fahad Bayo expected in action for Ashdod in Israel while Charles Lukwago’s St. George will take on Simba in Dar es Salaam in the Simba Day celebrations.
