Uganda Cubs crowned CECAFA U-17 winners after penalty shoot-out victory

The Uganda Cubs were crowned winners of the 2026 CECAFA U-17 Championship after defeating Somalia 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out in Monday’s final at Kigali Pele Stadium in Rwanda.

The closely contested encounter ended goalless in normal time, with both sides creating scoring opportunities but failing to find the breakthrough. Uganda goalkeeper David Dean Ssegirinya made two crucial saves in the final five minutes before producing another outstanding performance in the shoot-out, saving three penalties to guide Uganda to the title.

Captain Henry Muhoozi, Sebastian Fisher, Arnold Kayemba, Nicholas Kawoya, Martin Kayiwa and Junior Ofoyrwoth converted their penalties for Uganda, while Sumaku Mutawakali and Arafat Ibanda were denied.

The victory also secured Uganda’s qualification for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, with Somalia and Rwanda, who finished third, also earning places at the continental tournament.

The triumph marks Uganda’s third CECAFA U-17 title, following previous victories in 2020 and 2024.

Uganda’s success was further reflected in the individual awards, with Muhoozi named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, Kayemba finishing as the top scorer and Ssegirinya claiming the Best Goalkeeper award.

‘I am very happy with the players because we worked so hard, topped the group, beat Ethiopia in the semi-finals and now lifted the trophy after winning on penalties,’ said Uganda Cubs head coach Laryea Kingston.

Captain Muhoozi also expressed his delight at leading the national team to victory and securing qualification for the continental finals.

‘We are very proud of ourselves and thank everyone for the support,’ he said.
