Overview
The FUFA Big League is the official second tier of Ugandan football, organised by the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA). Since its establishment in 2009, the competition has evolved from a regional-based format into a fully national and increasingly professional league.
The competition was introduced as part of a broader restructuring of Ugandan football to strengthen the pathway between regional competitions and the top division. It has since become a critical platform for club development, player progression, and national football competitiveness.
Evolution of the League
The FUFA Big League has undergone significant transformation since its inception. In its early years, the league operated under a dual-group system comprising the Elgon and Rwenzori groups. This structure was designed to reduce travel costs while maintaining competitive balance across regions.
From the 2021/2022 season, FUFA introduced a single table format, bringing all clubs into one national league. This shift standardised competition, enhanced fairness in promotion, and improved the overall quality of play.
The league further expanded to 16 clubs from the 2023/2024 season, with the top three teams earning automatic promotion to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.
FUFA Big League Winners (2009–2025)
The championship was historically decided through a playoff final between the winners of the two groups. Since the 2021/2022 season, the title is awarded to the team that finishes top of the single league table.
