The stage is set for a classic cup encounter as Uganda Premier League table leaders Vipers SC welcome Northern Regional League pacesetters Pajule Lions FC in the Round of 32 of the 52nd Stanbic Uganda Cup.
The fixture scheduled for today pits Uganda’s top-flight frontrunners against a determined third-tier side chasing history. A David-versus-Goliath showdown in Kitende, Wakiso.
Pajule Lions: Northern Pride on a Mission
For Pajule Lions FC, the journey to Wakiso is more than just a football trip—it is a statement of ambition. The Pader District-based side currently tops the Northern Regional League with 29 points, level with Red Devo FC but boasting a superior head-to-head record, better goal difference (16 compared to 13), and a crucial game in hand.
Their rise in recent seasons has been impressive. In the 50th edition of the Stanbic Uganda Cup, Pajule Lions reached the semi-finals while still competing in the third division (Amateur League). Their remarkable run ended at the hands of Kitara FC, who went on to lift the trophy.
That history offers belief that they can compete beyond their tier. Facing the reigning champions will be their sternest test yet, but Pajule will draw inspiration from their giant-killing pedigree and the unpredictability of cup football.
Vipers SC: Defending Champions in Command
Vipers head into the contest brimming with confidence. The Venoms currently sit atop the Uganda Premier League table with 38 points, underlining their dominance in domestic football this season.
They are also the defending Stanbic Uganda Cup champions, having defeated KCCA FC 2-0 in last season’s final at the FUFA Stadium Kadiba in Kampala. That triumph marked their continued supremacy in knockout football and added another prestigious trophy to their cabinet.
With league momentum on their side and pedigree in cup competitions, Vipers will be firm favourites. However, knockout football often writes its own scripts.
Road to the Round of 32
Both Vipers SC and Pajule Lions FC had to dig deep in the Round of 64 to secure their places in the 52nd Stanbic Uganda Cup Round of 32.
For the defending champions, it was a professional and disciplined performance on the road. Vipers edged Northern Regional League outfit Northern Gateway SC 1-0 in Lira, navigating a potentially tricky away fixture with composure. The narrow victory underlined the Venoms’ ability to grind out results in hostile territory, a hallmark of champions aiming to retain their crown.
Meanwhile in Pader, Pajule Lions produced a spirited comeback to eliminate FUFA Big League side Paidha Black Angels 2-1. After conceding first, the Northern Regional League leaders showed resilience and attacking intent, overturning the deficit in front of their home supporters to book a historic spot in the Round of 32.
The contrasting paths—Vipers’ controlled away triumph and Pajule’s dramatic comeback—set the tone for an intriguing clash between top-tier authority and third-division ambition in the next round.
Coaches Speak Ahead of Crunch Cup Tie
The reigning Stanbic Uganda Cup winners, Vipers SC, may be tipped by many to comfortably book a place in the Round of 16, but head coach Ivan Minnaert insists his side will approach the fixture with utmost seriousness and respect for their opponents.
’We are preparing for the game like we prepare for any other game. There’s no small team because every team wants to show their strength against Vipers SC’
Meanwhile, Pajule Lions head coach Dickson Lumumba Ongwec remains quietly confident despite acknowledging the magnitude of the challenge ahead.
‘On paper, Vipers are favourites — everyone knows that,’ Ongwec admitted. ‘But football is not played on paper. It is played on the pitch, and for 90 minutes anything can happen. We have prepared well, and we believe in ourselves.’
Ongwec also addressed the challenge of playing under floodlights, something unfamiliar to many of his players from Northern Uganda. ‘It might take us a few minutes to adjust because we are not used to this environment,’ he noted. ‘But once the boys settle, I am confident they will compete strongly. This is a big stage for us, and we want to show character.’
He concluded with a passionate call to supporters: ‘We carry the pride of our community. I urge our fans and everyone from the North to stand with us. Their support gives the players extra strength, and tonight we will fight for them.’
High Stakes Beyond Silverware
The importance of the Stanbic Uganda Cup extends beyond domestic glory. The tournament winner earns the right to represent Uganda’s football governing body, the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA), in the CAF Confederation Cup — Africa’s second-most prestigious club competition.
For Vipers, continental qualification is an expectation. For Pajule Lions, it remains a dream—but one that begins with 90 minutes of belief and bravery in Wakiso.
